The Laboratory of Chemical Materials Science was established in 1995. From 1998 to 2016, the laboratory was headed by Nikolay Z. Lyakhov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, from 2016 - Natalya I. Baklanova, Doctor of Chemical Sciences. There are 22 people in the laboratory staff, including 5 doctors and 9 candidates of sciences.

Major Directions of Research Activities
- Synthesis of fiber-reinforced nanocomposite materials. Modification of microfiber surface by nanoscale coatings. Development of high-temperature oxidation-resistant protective coatings.
- Synthesis of nanostructured ceramics.
- Study of the functional properties of oxides with mixed oxygen-electron conductivity. Study of the mechanism of oxygen transport in nonstoichiometric perovskites. Development of oxygen-permeable membranes for separation of oxygen from air and conversion of hydrocarbons. Development of microtubular medium temperature solid oxide fuel cells.
- Synthesis of multicomponent metallic and (metal, oxide) / polymer nanostructured materials. Study of mechanisms of mechanochemical interaction in the systems: metal-metal, metal-oxide, metal-carbon.
- Synthesis of mechanocomposites as the basis for SHS and thermal synthesis of ultradisperse oxide materials and metal-ceramic composites.
